Malayalam Classics : Thaniyavarthanam , Sadayam and Kireedam Watch experience

When we talk about Malayalam cinema classics, the writer–director duo of A. K. Lohithadas and Sibi Malayil stands in a league of its own. Together they created stories that weren’t just films, but mirrors of society raw, emotional, and timeless. Among their many masterpieces, three films in particular left me stunned:

Thaniyavarthanam, Sadayam, and Kireedam.

  •  Kireedam (1989)

Kireedam is the most popular of the three and for good reason. It is a deeply relatable tragedy about Seethuraman, played by Mohanlal, a young man who dreams of becoming a police officer. He is the ideal son and brother loved, admired, and full of promise. But one wrong decision shatters his life and career, sending him down a path he never wished for.

The emotional weight of this film is carried not just by the performances but also by the writing. Lohitadas captures the fragility of fate  how a single mistake can destroy everything. Mohanlal and Thilakan together deliver unforgettable performances, especially in the climax, which remains one of the most devastating endings in Malayalam cinema. The iconic song “Kanneer Poovinte” amplifies the heartbreak, showing how Sethu slowly loses grip on life and love.

Kireedam resonated so strongly because Malayali audiences saw their own lives in Sethu  the struggle, the societal expectations, and the cruel twists of destiny. The film was so impactful it even got a sequel, Chenkol, exploring Sethu’s life after prison.

  • Thaniyavarthanam (1987)

Thaniyavarthanam (which means “Recurring Rhythms”) is perhaps the best portrayal of the social stigma around mental illness in Indian cinema. The film follows Balagopalan, played brilliantly by Mammootty, who becomes a victim of society’s superstition. Though he is perfectly sane, the community around him believes he has inherited a “hereditary curse” of madness passed down through generations.

What makes the film remarkable is the way Lohitadas wrote it the tension doesn’t come from Balagopalan’s actions, but from how people react to him. The more society whispers, the more he starts doubting himself. Mammootty’s performance is nothing short of haunting, capturing the helplessness of a man destroyed not by illness, but by prejudice. Sibi Malayil’s direction frames the narrative with raw realism, and the cinematography keeps you locked into the suffocating atmosphere of the village.

This film is still relevant today because it speaks about how society often kills a person twice once through suspicion, and once through isolation.

  •   Sadayam (1992)

Among Lohitadas’ most layered and controversial works, Sadayam stands tall. The story of Satyanathan, played by Mohanlal, is heartbreaking and complex. The film tackles uncomfortable yet important themes prostitution, lack of education, exploitation of dreams, and how society often shuts its doors on the helpless.

The screenplay is intense but beautifully structured, with each layer slowly revealing Satyanathan’s broken world. Lohitadas doesn’t spoon-feed morality instead, he leaves us questioning whether Satyanathan’s actions were purely criminal or driven by a desperate sense of protection and justice. Mohanlal delivers one of his finest performances, moving between subtle vulnerability and explosive intensity with ease.

The grounded direction by Sibi Malayil makes this story more than just cinema it feels like a real tragedy unfolding in front of us. It’s a film that leaves you shaken, with no easy answers, which is precisely its brilliance.
