If you’re planning to get into mountaineering or serious trekking, doing a proper mountaineering course is one of the best steps you can take.
When I first started exploring it, finding clear information wasn’t easy. Everything felt scattered and a bit confusing.
So, here’s a simple breakdown based on my experience things that will genuinely help if you’re planning to join a course.
What is BMC?
Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) is a 28 days foundational course that teaches essential skills required for high altitude climbing.
It includes:
- ice /snow craft
- Rock Craft and sports climbing
- Rope work
- Basic survival techniques
The course involves intense training at altitudes up to 15,000 ft, so a good level of physical fitness is required.
Both theoretical and practical aspects of mountaineering are covered during the course.
Career options after BMC
After completing BMC, one can go for Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC) and further specialize in mountaineering.
Some of the career paths include:
- Trek leader and guide
- Base camp manager
- Expedition member
- Adventure tourism operator (Start your own trekking company)
- Corporate/Outdoor training & team building
Even if not taken as a career, BMC helps in building discipline, endurance, and mental strength which is useful in any field.
My Journey
I completed my Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC373) from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in March 2026.
But the process started much earlier.
I applied in August 2025.
Got my confirmation mail around October.
So yeah you don’t apply and go immediately. There’s always a waiting period.
How the application process works
It’s actually simple.
But if you’re doing it for the first time, it can feel confusing.
For most institutes, the process is almost the same:
Go to the official website
Select BMC (Basic Mountaineering Course)
Choose an available slot
Upload documents
Pay the fees
That’s it.
Documents required
Nothing complicated.
ID proof
Medical certificate
The medical certificate is mandatory.
You can do the necessary tests and get the certificate from any nearby doctor. It Costed me between 2-3k for entire tests including doctor fees .
Waiting period
This is where most people get surprised.
Even after applying, you won’t get an immediate slot.
There’s always a waiting time.
As of 2026,waiting period of all institutes :
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM)— ~1 year
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI)— ~5 months
National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS)— ~4 months
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS)-1 to 1.1 years
Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports( (JIM) — ~3 months
So if you’re planning, apply early.

NIMAS — ₹29,800
ABVIMAS — ₹25,000
JIM — Not clearly listed
Physical fitness required
BMC needs a decent level of fitness and endurance.
You’re expected to be prepared even before the course starts.
If not, you’ll struggle.
For me, my preparation was simple:
Consistent running
Basic upper body workouts at home
No gym and all. But if you can go to gym it will help you build the necessary upper and lower strength.
I tried following most of the workout from a pre-course workout plan from HMI and tried to stay consistent.
You can refer to a standard pre-course workout plan for BMC here: Pre course workout
How a typical day looks in BMC
Life during BMC is very structured.
Everything runs on time.

Things to keep in mind
This routine might look simple. But it’s not. You’ll be tired almost all the time. But that’s the whole point.
The course pushes you physically, but more importantly mentally.
Most importantly .Don’t wait too long trying to figure out everything perfectly. It just delays things.Pick an institute. Apply and start the process.
If you’re even slightly interested in mountaineering, don’t ignore it.
Just start.
Note
Insurance is mandatory for BMC .You can contact your institute for details regarding to cost ,formalities and where it can be buyed from (I got my insurance done during my course in HMI at a cost of 1000 INR ) .
