Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu turned out to be one of the most surprising watches for me this year. I had no idea about this movie beforehand not even the trailer and I think that actually worked in its favor. We’ve seen countless Dracula and vampire films over the years, and most of them feel repetitive. But this film stands out not just among the Dracula adaptations, but in the entire vampire and folklore genre.
Eggers, who has already proved his mastery in bringing folklore to the screen, does it once again here. From the very beginning, Nosferatu sets the mood that you’re about to witness something truly special. The shadow play, the narration, and the haunting atmosphere all create a sense of unease that slowly builds into dread.
What really elevates the film is the atmosphere of darkness, supported by a fabulous performance from Lily-Rose Depp. As the story progresses, we watch things spiral out of control for the young couple and their small town the core question being , what happens when Dracula comes to your city?
Sound plays a huge role in this experience. The way it builds tension and amplifies the eerie setting is remarkable. It’s safe to say this is easily one of the best movies of the year for me. Eggers manages to take a story we all thought we knew and breathe new life into it, making it feel both terrifying and refreshing.
Advisory – The movie has sexual scenes, a few disturbing visuals, and some bloody sequences.
