The Lost Bus (2025), directed by Paul Greengrass, is a technically well made movie about the real-life 2018 Camp Fire wildfire in California and how a school bus driver and teacher evacuated 22 children to safety.
The screenplay grips you early based on true events, it adds that layer of urgency and weight. I didn’t expect to be on a Matthew McConaughey ride from the start, but he absolutely delivers. His portrayal of Kevin McKay (bus driver) as a father and as someone torn by fear yet determined is powerful. The redemption arc isn’t new, but here, it feels earned and unique in how the story unfolds.
VFX are top notch they make the fire, smoke, chaos believable without overwhelming the human moments. Music by James Newton Howard builds the tension just right, giving momentum when needed without becoming overpowering. Cinematography is strong the visuals of firelight and smoke, of children’s fear, of desperate roads do a lot of heavy lifting.
For me, this is one of the best quality films of the year. I loved it, and yes it was worth my time.
