Murdeshwar, located in North Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, is a coastal town known for its vibrant beaches and the world’s second-largest Shiva statue, which stands tall beside the Arabian Sea. The town derives its name from Murudeshwara, another name for Lord Shiva.
This was my first family trip after graduating and landing a job which made it even more special for me. Unlike my usual solo serene adventures, this one carried a different kind of warmth.
We started our trip by boarding a train from KSR Bengaluru to Murdeshwar. The best part about this destination is that it has its own railway station, making it easy and direct to reach.
After boarding at 6:50 PM, we reached Murdeshwar at 6 AM. The sight that welcomed us was unforgettable a golden sunrise peeking through the hills. It felt like therapy. Honestly, this was the most beautiful sunrise I’ve witnessed so far in my life.
From the station, you can either walk or take an auto to the temple area. We grabbed a chai from a small stall near the platform, but by the time we stepped out, all autos were taken. So, we decided to walk and that walk turned out to be beautiful in itself. The weather was perfect; the early morning light reflected on the wet roads, the air smelled of salt and freshness, and the faint sound of temple bells echoed from afar.from the station the temple is just 3 kms away.
After walking about a kilometer, we started spotting hotels. I enquired at a few places, negotiated a bit, and found a decent one for us. Travel really teaches you life lessons especially for an introvert like me, who once struggled to start a conversation. Every journey has given me small but important social and survival skills.
Our hotel was big, clean, and had a nice view of the Western Ghats. After freshening up, we headed to Kamat Yatri Nivas restaurent for breakfast a bit on the pricier side, but the food was clean and tasty. My family loved the dosas, and honestly, their happiness made my day.
We dropped our chappals at the counter (₹5 per pair) and entered the temple barefoot. The sound of conch shells, the sea breeze, and the faint chanting around created an atmosphere that words can’t describe.
- Murdeshwar Temple
A short walk from the restaurant brought us to the iconic Murdeshwar Temple, a centuries-old shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for its 123-feet-tall Shiva statue, which is the second tallest in the world after Kailashnath Temple’s statue in Nepal.
The sight of the massive statue, with the blue sea behind it, was divine. The precision and detailing of the sculpture are just incredible. The temple tower (Raja Gopura) itself is 20 storeys high and stands at around 237 feet, offering panoramic views of the sea and temple complex.
After compeleting all the darshan we headed to cave museum.
Inside the temple complex lies the Bhukailasa Cave Museum, an artistic and spiritual stop that you shouldn’t miss. The entry fee is ₹20 per person. The museum beautifully depicts scenes from Hindu mythology and the story of Murdeshwar through colorful statues and ambient lighting.
From there, we headed to queque to take the lift to the 18th floor of the Raja Gopura, which costs about ₹20 per person. To avoid the long queue I would suggest one to come early to temple .From the top, the view is simply breathtaking the giant Shiva statue overlooking the vast Arabian Sea, the temple courtyard, and the small fishing boats scattered like dots below.
Since Murdeshwar is a coastal town, it can get humid quickly. So, carry a cap, a water bottle, and an umbrella, especially during the monsoon months when the weather tends to change in minutes.
We finished our temple visit by 11:30 AM, grabbed some juices ,icecreams and Gudbud from neaby restaurent.
After having juices it was nearly 12pm and since I didn't wanted to go back to hotel and come back for lunch we decided to shop for a bit and then walked around the beach for a bit to pass the time ,
We went to the famous Naveen Beach Restaurant, which sits right beside Murdeshwar Beach, giving a direct view of the sea. From the tables, you can actually see the waves crashing just a few meters away it felt surreal.By luck we found an empty table with the picturesque view
After having our lunch and some juice, we just sat there for a while, soaking in the sea breeze. This restaurant was decently priced, and honestly, I felt it was worth it for the view and the peaceful vibe it gave. The combination of good food, soft sea wind, and the sound of waves made it feel luxurious in the simplest way possible.
After lunch we headed back to hotel and rested for bit to come back to beach later.
Located right next to the temple, Murdeshwar Beach is the safest and most beautiful beach I’ve visited till now . The waves are gentle, and as a non-swimmer, I still felt completely at ease. My brother and I played in the water for nearly two hours, laughing like kids again.
By evening, the sun began to set and what a sight it was! The sky slowly turned golden, then orange, then deep red before fading into twilight. It was mesmerizing. I just sat quietly, watching the waves reflect those changing shades. It was a reminder of how beautiful simplicity can be.
If you're going to Murdeshwar carry extra pair of beach dress and enjoy the mesmersing sunset .
Changing rooms here are limited, but if you walk towards the temple side, you’ll find paid washrooms to change your clothes and small shops selling towels, snacks, and souvenirs.
Murdeshwar Beach also offers water sports like banana boat rides, parasailing, speed boating, and scuba diving at Netrani Island about 20 km off the coast. If you’re into adventure, this is one of the best places for diving in Karnataka, with crystal-clear water and vibrant marine life.

After soaking in the sunset, we returned to our hotel, freshened up, and went to hotel and got our dinner parcels. The auto to the station cost us around ₹70 (2.3kms). Just as we reached, it started raining the same sky that was clear moments ago turned grey in minutes. That’s Murdeshwar for you unpredictable, beautiful, and peaceful.
The train journey back to Bengaluru felt quiet. I looked out the window, thinking about how every part of the day from sunrise to sunset felt like a perfect circle. Murdeshwar wasn’t just another trip; it was a calm reminder of faith, nature, and family.
Note:
Murdeshwar is a small temple town which one can walk easily .
Coming to budget it costed us nearly 7k to 8k for 4 people for one day as it was bit on luxurious side but one can solo it easily under 3 to 4k
