Warfare (2025) Review

Warfare (2025) is a raw, intense, and deeply immersive war film that strips away the usual heroism and instead shows war as it really is loud, terrifying, and unpredictable. Co directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, the film throws you right into the heart of a 2006 mission in Iraq where a small group of U.S. soldiers get trapped inside a building during an ambush. It doesn't try to glorify anything, and that’s where it hits hard. Mendoza, who has lived this life, brings his experience to every frame, and it shows. It’s not about flashy camera moves or dramatic slow-mo this one hits you with truth, grit, and a soundscape that’s as real as it gets.

The performances are all solid D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, and others make you feel like you’re right there with them. You feel the tension, the fear, and the emotional drain. While the film lacks deep characterisation or backstories, that absence feels deliberate because this isn’t about individuals, it’s about surviving a moment. What stands out most is how well the film captures the chaos of battle. The sound design is absolutely next level every bullet, every breath, every distant jet roar it’s all so precise that you almost forget you’re watching a film.

And big credit to A24 for backing something like this. This isn't your regular war movie it’s bold, it’s quiet when it needs to be, and it never fakes a moment. They’ve pushed the envelope once again by taking a true story and delivering it in a form that feels both cinematic and journalistic. It might not be for everyone, especially those used to conventional war dramas, but for those who want something real and grounded Warfare is definitely one to experience.
